Flipping is the idea that students get their first exposure to the subject content at home vs the classroom.  For my ceramics class, I took all my lectures and turned them into both handouts (word documents) and videos that students read and / or watch at home.  When they get to class they then get to spend all their time “doing” ceramics – working with clay.

10 Reasons to Flip

10 Reasons to flip your classroom:

1. Students get content (lectures or handouts) at home freeing up time in class to practice what they learned at home, collaborate with other students, and get help from peers.

2. Students have the option to get content material by either reading a handout, watching a video or doing both at home.

3. Students can fast forward / skim or rewind / re-read the content material at home.

4. Because students are getting content at home they can decide when to do this work.

5. Because students are getting content at home they have more time to work with clay when in the classroom.

6. Students become responsible for their learning.

7. Teachers benefit from the process of reducing their content to handouts and or videos, giving them an opportunity to fine tune these products.

8. Teachers get feedback from their students on the content material, giving them additional opportunities to fine tune these products.

9. Teachers no longer need to lecture during class.

10.  Teachers have more time to get to know their students.

The attached Excel file shows the structure of my class.  How I present information (Word Documents, Videos or both), the actions students must take, and the purpose of the assignment.

Self-Evaluations

For my class students always evaluate their work before they bring it to me for evaluation.  Here are the Self-Evaluation forms I used for Fall of 2015.  I teach a semester class and for Ceramics I students there are only 6 project they must complete.  For those students taking Ceramics II – they use the same format to develop Self-Evaluation forms for the 8 project they must complete during the semester.  They create the first three criteria.
